"And the child,—Miss Mona?" asks Geoffrey. Morning Star would not listen. He ran toward the water and Scarface ran after him, for he knew that he must kill the birds and save the boy's life. Then there is a faint pause, and then—— An hour later, coming out of it again, feeling harassed and anxious, he finds Dorothy walking restlessly up and down the corridor outside, as though listening for some sound she pines to hear. Her pretty face, usually so bright and debonnaire, is pale and sad. Her lips are trembling. This is hardly complimentary, but Geoffrey passes it over. He moves as though to take up the pistol again; but Mona is beforehand with him, and, closing her fingers round it, holds it firmly..
